Have you noticed that your dog’s back legs look thinner than they used to? Maybe the muscles around their hips have become less defined, one leg looks noticeably smaller than the other, or your senior dog’s hindquarters seem to be shrinking.

This loss of muscle mass is called muscle atrophy, and it can have a significant effect on a dog’s strength, balance, and mobility.

Muscle loss doesn’t always mean that a dog is simply “getting old.” Dogs can lose muscle because they’re using a leg less due to pain, recovering from an injury or surgery, living with a neurological condition, or becoming less active as their mobility declines.

The important question isn’t just how do we rebuild the muscle? It’s why is the muscle disappearing in the first place?

Understanding the cause of your dog’s muscle loss is the first step toward helping them maintain—or in some cases regain—strength and mobility.

What Is Muscle Atrophy in Dogs?

Muscle atrophy is a decrease in the size and mass of muscle tissue. When muscles aren’t being used normally, aren’t receiving normal nerve signals, or the body is affected by certain illnesses, muscle tissue can gradually waste away.

In dogs with mobility problems, muscle atrophy can create a difficult cycle:

Pain, weakness, or injury → less movement → muscle loss → greater weakness → even less movement

Reduced loading and immobilization are known to contribute to changes in muscle and other musculoskeletal tissues.

Breaking that cycle often means addressing both sides of the problem: the condition causing the reduced mobility and the resulting loss of strength.

What Does Muscle Loss Look Like in a Dog?

Muscle atrophy isn’t always obvious at first, particularly in long-haired dogs.

You may notice:

  • Thinner thighs or hind legs
  • More prominent hip bones, spine, shoulders, or other bony areas
  • One leg appearing smaller than the opposite leg
  • Less definition around the hips or shoulders
  • Difficulty standing up
  • Reduced ability to climb stairs or jump
  • Tires more quickly during walks
  • Trouble maintaining balance
  • Increasing dependence on the front legs
  • Changes in posture or gait

One of the easiest ways to notice muscle loss is to compare the same area on both sides of your dog’s body. A significant difference between the left and right thigh, for example, may indicate that your dog has been avoiding putting normal weight through one leg.

Gradual, generalized muscle loss can be harder to recognize because both sides of the body may change at the same time.

Why Is My Dog Losing Muscle in Their Back Legs?

There isn’t one single cause of muscle atrophy. The pattern of muscle loss, and what else is happening with your dog’s mobility, can provide important clues.

1. Your Dog Isn’t Using the Leg Normally

This is known as disuse atrophy. It occurs when dogs are “down” for an extended period of time and unable to walk on their own, causing muscles to deteriorate and the dog to lose its strength. (This is incredibly common among paralyzed dogs).

If a dog has pain, an injury, or another condition that causes them to use a limb less, the muscles aren’t working as hard as they normally would. Over time, they can become smaller and weaker.

This can occur with:

  • Arthritis
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Knee injuries
  • Cruciate ligament injuries
  • Fractures
  • Recovery after surgery
  • Extended periods of restricted activity
  • Chronic limping

A dog doesn’t have to stop using a leg completely for muscle loss to occur. Even consistently shifting weight away from a painful limb can reduce how much those muscles are being used.

2. Neurological Problems

Muscles depend on nerves to tell them when and how to contract.

Spinal cord or peripheral nerve problems can interfere with those signals, potentially contributing to neurogenic muscle atrophy.

Dogs with neurological mobility problems may show muscle loss alongside symptoms such as:

  • Knuckling
  • Dragging the paws
  • Weak back legs
  • Poor coordination
  • Crossing the back legs
  • Difficulty standing
  • Partial or complete paralysis

Conditions such as intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), degenerative myelopathy (DM), spinal injuries, and certain peripheral nerve disorders can all affect mobility and muscle use.

The rehabilitation approach for neurological patients needs to be tailored to the dog’s specific neurological condition and functional ability.

3. Age-Related Muscle Loss

Dogs naturally undergo changes in body composition as they age, including loss of lean body mass. Age-related loss of muscle is often referred to as sarcopenia.

But there’s an important distinction:

Getting older can contribute to muscle loss. That doesn’t mean significant weakness should automatically be dismissed as “old age.”

An older dog may simultaneously be dealing with arthritis, chronic pain, neurological disease, reduced activity, or another health condition that accelerates muscle loss.

If your senior dog’s hindquarters seem to be shrinking or their mobility has noticeably changed, talk with your veterinarian rather than assuming age is the only cause.

Why Is One of My Dog’s Back Legs Thinner Than the Other?

Muscle loss that is noticeably worse in one leg deserves attention.

It can indicate that your dog isn’t using that limb normally.

For example, pain from a knee or hip problem may cause a dog to shift more of their body weight onto the opposite leg. Over time, the underused leg may lose muscle.

You might first notice that:

  • One thigh looks smaller
  • One hip appears more prominent
  • Your dog consistently stands with less weight on one leg
  • One leg shakes or tires sooner
  • Your dog favors one side when standing up

Rather than focusing only on rebuilding the smaller muscle, it’s important to determine why your dog isn’t loading that limb normally.

Muscle Atrophy vs. Weak Back Legs: What’s the Difference?

The two are closely connected, but they aren’t exactly the same thing.

Weak back legs are a symptom. A dog may have difficulty supporting their hindquarters because of arthritis, neurological disease, injury, pain, muscle loss, or another underlying condition. Muscle atrophy describes an actual loss of muscle mass.

A dog with muscle atrophy may develop weak back legs because there is less muscle available to generate strength. But a dog can also develop weakness first and subsequently lose muscle because they aren’t moving normally.

That’s why identifying which came first—and what’s causing it—can matter.

Can Dogs Regain Muscle After Muscle Atrophy?

Sometimes, yes. How much muscle a dog can regain depends heavily on why the muscle was lost in the first place.

A dog who has lost muscle because of temporary inactivity after an injury may have a very different recovery potential than a dog whose muscle loss is associated with a progressive neurological disease.

When the underlying problem can be treated or managed and the dog can safely begin using the affected muscles again, veterinary rehabilitation may focus on gradually rebuilding strength, endurance, flexibility, and normal movement patterns.

The goal isn’t necessarily to make the affected leg look exactly as it did before.

The more important goal is functional strength: helping your dog stand, walk, balance, and participate in everyday activities as safely and independently as possible.

How to Help a Dog Rebuild Muscle Safely

The temptation when you see muscle loss is to simply exercise the dog more. That’s not always safe.

If your dog stopped using a leg because it hurts, increasing exercise without addressing the pain can make the underlying problem worse. Likewise, rehabilitation for a dog recovering from orthopedic surgery will be very different from rehabilitation for a dog with IVDD or degenerative myelopathy.

A veterinarian or canine rehabilitation professional can help determine what level and type of exercise is appropriate.

Depending on the dog’s condition, rehabilitation may incorporate:

Controlled Walking

Short, controlled walks can encourage normal weight-bearing without exhausting the dog.

Quality matters more than distance. A shorter walk with good paw placement and controlled movement can be more beneficial than pushing a weak dog through a long walk after their gait begins to deteriorate.

Sit-to-Stand Exercises

For appropriate dogs, controlled transitions between sitting and standing can engage muscles in the hindquarters.

However, dogs with certain injuries, significant pain, or severe weakness may not be ready for this exercise.

Weight-Shifting Exercises

Gently encouraging a dog to shift their body weight can activate stabilizing muscles and improve body awareness.

Hydrotherapy

Underwater treadmills and other forms of professionally supervised hydrotherapy may allow some dogs to practice movement with reduced weight-bearing while still working their muscles.

Therapeutic Exercise

Veterinary rehabilitation programs may use exercises and equipment designed to improve strength, balance, coordination, range of motion, and endurance. Programs should be individualized because certain rehabilitation modalities or exercises may be inappropriate for particular conditions.

Don’t Forget About Traction

A dog can’t effectively use their muscles if they’re constantly trying not to fall.

Hardwood, laminate, and tile floors can make movement much more difficult for a dog with weak legs. A dog may shorten their stride, tense their body, or avoid walking across an area entirely if they don’t feel secure.

Adding:

  • Non-slip rugs
  • Carpet runners
  • Yoga mats
  • Paw traction products

can give your dog a more stable surface from which to stand and move.

Better footing doesn’t rebuild muscle by itself, but it can create an environment where your dog is better able to use the strength they still have.

Can a Lifting Harness Help With Muscle Atrophy?

A lifting harness can be useful when weakness makes it difficult for your dog to stand or walk safely.

The key is to think of the harness as support rather than replacement whenever your dog’s condition allows it.

Instead of completely carrying your dog’s hindquarters, you may be able to provide just enough assistance to help them maintain balance and participate in the movement themselves.

For dogs with primarily hind-leg weakness, a rear-support harness may be appropriate. Dogs requiring more extensive assistance may benefit from a full-body lifting harness.

The right amount of support depends on your dog’s diagnosis, strength, pain level, and ability to bear weight.

Can a Dog Wheelchair Help Maintain Muscle?

A wheelchair doesn’t necessarily mean your dog has stopped using their legs.

Many dogs who retain voluntary movement can use a properly fitted wheelchair while continuing to move their back legs. The cart can reduce the amount of weight the dog needs to support while providing stability and helping them remain active.

For dogs who tire quickly or can’t reliably support their hindquarters, that assistance may make it possible to continue participating in walks and movement that would otherwise be difficult.

However, whether a wheelchair is appropriate, and how much your dog should use their affected limbs, depends on the underlying condition.

Does Protein Help Dogs Rebuild Muscle?

Muscle health and nutrition are connected, but more protein isn’t automatically the answer to unexplained muscle loss.

Senior dogs undergo changes in protein metabolism and lean body mass, and appropriate nutrition can be an important part of maintaining muscle.

But dietary needs vary substantially depending on age, activity level, kidney and other medical conditions, body condition, and the reason for the muscle loss.

If your dog is losing muscle despite eating normally, or is losing overall body weight as well, talk with your veterinarian before simply increasing calories, protein, or supplements.

When Should You Be Concerned About Muscle Loss?

Gradual changes can be easy to dismiss, but visible muscle loss deserves veterinary attention, particularly when it is new, progressive, or accompanied by other mobility changes.

Contact your veterinarian if you notice:

  • Rapid or unexplained muscle loss
  • One leg becoming noticeably smaller
  • Significant weight loss
  • New weakness
  • Difficulty standing
  • Limping or signs of pain
  • Knuckling or dragging paws
  • Sudden difficulty walking
  • Loss of coordination
  • Changes in appetite or energy

Sudden inability to stand or walk, paralysis, severe pain, or rapidly worsening neurological symptoms should be treated as urgent.

Muscle Loss Doesn’t Always Mean Your Dog Has to Stop Moving

Seeing your dog’s legs become thinner can be alarming, especially when muscle loss is accompanied by changes in how they stand or walk.

But the visible muscle loss is only part of the story.

The most important step is determining why your dog is losing muscle. Pain, inactivity, orthopedic disease, neurological conditions, aging, and systemic illness can all affect muscle mass—and each may require a different approach.

For many dogs, maintaining safe movement is an important part of preserving mobility. Veterinary rehabilitation can help address strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, and movement while accounting for the dog’s underlying condition.

The goal isn’t simply bigger muscles.

It’s helping your dog use the strength they have—and safely build the strength they can—to remain as mobile and independent as possible.
